Echols has three-RBI night, USA shuts out Puerto Rico

For the first time in the U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup 2019 the USA had to play the whole game. This didn’t change the outcome of the night, since the defending World Champions beat Puerto Rico, 6-0, to remain undefeated. Second baseman Charla Echols had a three-RBI night.

Puerto Rico will go to the books as the first team in the tournament to reach on a base hit against the USA. Left fielder Tatiana Roman hit an infield single off Montana Fouts in the top of the first. She became then the second out of the inning as she left early first base on a steal attempt. Puerto Rico won’t have another runner against Fouts, who recorded the win striking out 11 without issuing a walk, and reliever Rylee Trlicek, who took care of the last three outs.

The USA scored the first run in the bottom of the first thanks to flying leadoff hitter Skylar Wallace. The left fielder drew a walk, then stole second and scored directly from second on a sacrifice fly to right by second baseman Charla Echols.

In the bottom of the third Wallace reached on a drag bunt, easily stole second and ran all the way to home plate on a single up the middle by Echols.

The third run came in the bottom of the fourth. With temporary runner Allchin Curran on board, first baseman Kelly sent a bullet off the wall in left field for an RBI-double.

The USA was not overpowering like in previous games but capitalized on any other opportunity. In the bottom of the fifth they thrived on a defensive error and in the bottom of the sixth they added a run on back to back extra-base hits by Echols and second baseman Jasmine Freed.
